Making Stuff

The kids and I are having the coziest Saturday afternoon. We've watched movies, made some cherry jello and built forts in the livingroom. Chloe snuck off to a Brownie sleepover (lucky girl) so it's just the three of us today.
It just started to snow outside again. Big, fluffy flakes are quickly covering up all the kid and kitty tracks in the backyard. Looks like winter is maybe sticking around for a little bit longer. More hibernating you say? Okay :)

I've been keeping busy just making 'stuff'. This past week I've been tweaking a recipe for an amazing brown sugar facial scrub. I've been leaning more and more towards all natural products lately. Have you ever looked at the label on the back of your facial cleansers, shampoos etc? What's with all the weird unpronouncable (probably cancer causing) chemicals? Why are we putting that crap on our faces and bodies? Brainwashing.Yep. :)

Here's a simple recipe for the most amazing facial scrub/body polish that you can make with stuff you have in your kitchen.
 Start with equal amounts of brown sugar and honey. I used 2 tablespoons of each which is more than enough for your face. (Double the recipe if you want enough for a body scrub.)
Grate about a 1/4 teaspoon of fresh ginger and add a squeeze of lemon juice. Skip the ginger if you don't have it. I just happen to have ridiculous amounts of it in my fridge right now. 
 Mix everything together gently and you're done!  
Now all you need to do is fill up the bathtub, light some candles, pour yourself some wine and experience the best smelling scrub ever.You can even eat it if you're feeling snacky.Try doing that with your other cleansers. Yeah, you'd be calling 911.
I've used this scrub three times this week and my skin is soft, glowing and clear. I'm really impressed. Next time I make this scrub I might try adding in some cinnamon or nutmeg. (I made sure to research what ingredients are safe for the skin in order to avoid any weird allergic reactions.)
Next on my list? Coffee scrub.Yummy. Stay tuned for THAT recipe :)
Earlier this week I made some ridiculously yummy banana bread. I found a healthier version of my regular recipe on Pinterest. The sugar and butter is replaced with honey and applesauce. Clever right? :)

Here's the recipe:
2 cups whole wheat flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup sugar free applesauce
3/4 cup honey
2 eggs, beaten
3 mashed overripe bananas
* I added some mini semi-sweet chocolate chips to my batter to give it a little extra bling *

Directions

1.Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease a 9x5 inch loaf pan.

2.In a large bowl, combine flour, baking soda and salt. In a separate bowl, mix together applesauce and honey. Stir in eggs and mashed bananas until well blended. Stir banana mixture into flour mixture; stir just to moisten. Pour batter into prepared loaf pan.

3.Bake in preheated oven for 60 to 65 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into center of the loaf comes out clean. Let bread cool in pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack.
 
I would suggest that you give at least half the loaf away so you don't eat the entire thing yourself :)
